Manage Team
During the first year of production, I was the only game designer on the project, so I put the whole game concept on paper. Then, at the start of production, an intern Game Designer and an intern QA Tester came on board. Their main tasks were to come up with ideas to improve the mini-games and to balance their difficulty. They were then able to fine-tune the writing of the game's dialogues and ensure quality assurance.

Find References
One of my first tasks was to read all the comic books and review other Smurfs merchandising to identify situations that could be fun to turn into mini-games. I then compiled images of the Smurfs and the most iconic buildings from the comic books as references for the artists to use.

-
World & Level Design
I created several maps where I distributed the mini-games and iconic locations across different areas, which I grouped together in a “circular” world. This work was done in parallel with the mini-games to ensure that the game content was evenly distributed across the open world.
I then created the blocking for this open world and took care of the final touches of the level design until the end of production, collaborating with the artists.

-
Write Design Documents
Naturally, I was in charge of writing all the gameplay and story documents. I wrote the Game Design Document, various Balancing tables, a Dialogues document, a Cinematics document, a Controls document and the Mockups for the mini-game interfaces.

-
Concept all the Mini-games
I conceptualized, adjusted and supervised the production of the 50 mini-games from A to Z, in collaboration with the studio's programmers.

-
Create and implement the 42 Open World Missions
I've created 42 different missions to enhance the Open World. The missions can be varied and incorporate the main mechanics of the game, such as the Segway and the slingshot. Even though the missions are grouped into categories, I tried to make each one unique by modifying the gameplay rules to avoid monotony.

-
Narrative Design
I imagined the game's cinematics and wrote their dialogue in collaboration with the studio's animators. Moreover, I wrote all the dialogues in the game, as well as voicelines heard in the open world.

Game Design Document
I started working on the Smurfs GDD on my first day at Balio. I was given carte blanche and promised a game with a lot of ambition. The game's considerable advantage is that each Smurf character can be easily duplicated, which is why I quickly decided to incorporate as many different characters as possible into the game. In total, there are 50 playable Smurfs and over 120 different NPC Smurfs in the open world. Each mini-game is based on an iconic Smurf, for example, Clumsy Smurf gives access to a mini-game where players must transport a stack of plates from one table to another without dropping them.

The game's adventure mode features unique mechanics such as a slingshot or a Smurfway that allow players to interact with the environment. I also detailed the various resources in the game that can be spent on building a mushroom house or completing special missions.

The document also details all of the different game modes (Multiplayer Local & Solo). We have also included a secret game mode that unlocks after completing the adventure and allows you to beat Hefty Smurf's high scores on each mini-game.

World & Design
Open World
The world map did not change much during production because the areas were placed in a circular pattern around the lake. The Smurfs' village is located at the top left and Gargamel's house is on the opposite side, at the bottom right. The enchanted forest area is inaccessible until the main quest allows us to access it.

Level Design
According to the global world map, a general blocking of each area was done. A second map of each area was created (see image opposite) to rearrange the better points of interest and staging. The blocking was then improved to best match this vision. Finally, the artists refined the visual details and the layout of the areas.

Script Writing
I wrote a fairly long document detailing all the dialogue, which was then transcribed into a storyboard. This document served as a guide for the game's narrative structure, onto which the mini-games and side missions were grafted.

Timeline
The diagram below clearly shows the three-act structure of the scenario, with possible choices available to players to complete an act (usually by obtaining a required number of items). The game includes small bonuses once the game is completed, which will delight completionist players.
